There's a pedophile in the Senate

Mr. Ramon Tulfo, a known broadcaster and journalist, in his 04 April 2008 column “On Target” in the Philippine Daily Inquirer, wrote about a pedophile in the Senate- “a Senator who is married [and] prefers girls 16 years old and younger.” The Senator, it was further alleged, has a 19-year old girlfriend. Mr. Tulfo claims that “[his] sources are unimpeachable.”

Indeed, every news or column article must be taken with a grain of salt. While Mr. Tulfo’s revelation can either be true or false, the Senate cannot turn a blind eye on it. Such an accusation undeniably destroys the chamber’s reputation, which each honorable senator must endeavor to uphold.

Pedophilia is considered a psychological disorder characterized by distinct sexual preference for prepubescent children, which cause irreparable harm to children victims. If found true, the elected public figure being referred to in the column effectively reduced the Upper House into a contemptible chamber harboring a child molester.

I firmly hope that the august body look into the matter and ascertain the truth of such claims, to address the alarming sexual abuse of minors- least well by a person in an elected position entrusted to uphold and protect the people’s rights, most especially the young.

An investigation is crucial to preserve the dignity and integrity of the Senate as a government branch worthy of the people’s trust: its members carrying out their obligations in a statesmanlike fashion, exemplifying life of honor, decency and respectability.
